About Us

Hi there.  We are Helen and Chris Owen.  We own Filey Holiday House and would like to share with you why we started it.

Why Filey?

We have a normal, if large family with 4 boys.  Where on earth can you go on holiday with 4 children and two adults, not forgetting the extended family.

The family first came to Filey on the Yorkshire coast back in 2001.  Chris had  spent many a holiday there as a child in the 70’s and 80’s.

Helen’s family had a week long get together in the Spring Bank holiday and having tried several locations across England we finally settled on Filey as being the perfect destination for everyone.

We looked for place to stay but couldn’t find one .  Accommodation was just not readily available for large families or a family get together.  Each year we came back to Filey and looked, but again drew a blank.  We came to the conclusion that Filey deserved a large family orientated holiday home for all occasions. There was a gap in the market, so we would try to open one!    It took a little time to find just the right place, but we did and Filey Holiday House is it!

Pet Free House

Chris is allergic to dogs and cats.  Many rental houses allow dogs, but there is then no guarantee that the animals have not been in the bedrooms.  Filey Holiday House doesn’t accept dogs.  Rest assured that if you suffer from pet allergies, Filey Holiday House will be a safe haven for you!

Filey Holiday House – our house!

Filey Holiday House itself was bought with family get-togethers in mind.  It is a large stunningly elegant Victorian 3 storey family house.   We have 5 double bedrooms and will easily sleep 10. We can take 11 if required due to a slight error on ordering a mattress!

The house is in a street of primarily family residences right opposite the tennis and bowling green.  Along the road is a large park with swings, a boating lake and cafĂ©. The road also has the pitch and putt and a full 18 hole golf course. We are 5 minutes walk from the beach.

Filey

Filey is situated at one end of a stunning 5 mile long white sandy beach.  It lies in a sheltered spot guarded from the British weather.  The North York Moors and Filey Brigg to the north, the Yorkshire Wolds to the west and Flamborough Head to the south.

At the end of the 5 mile beach lies Bempton Cliffs  a fantastic nature reserve. Filey beach is frequently visited by seals and puffins, oh and horses!  Filey bay received the honour of Britain’s Best Beach 2018 by The Times newspaper.

The cliffs and beach around Filey are a great source of fossils. Our children have quickly collected a wide range of good quality collectable fossils just from having a quick walk.

Filey has a yachting club with courses available for young and old.

Just up the coast lies Cayton Bay with it’s growing surfing reputation and surf school. The bay itself is absolutely stunning – definitely well worth a visit. We ourselves just passed it by for several years, then kicked ourselves once we found out what a glorious place it is

Scarborough, lying 7 miles north of Filey, boasts to be Britain’s first sea-side resort.  It is certainly magnificently located over two bays, with a fine castle and views to the moors.  Scarborough is also home to Oliver’s Mount road racing circuit for the petrol headed ones among us.
